On September 20, 1870, the Royal Italian army breached the classical walls at Porta Pia ending a thousand years of Papal rule and uniting Italy under a sole State. Thus, Rome became the Capital of Italy. However, the Eternal city wasn’t quite ready for the leap and paid a considerable price in the name of urban renewal.
